The Ulmer Münster

It has been the hallmark of the city and the region for centuries, and is indeed a synonym for Ulm both within Germany and abroad: the Ulmer Münster. This prominence is mainly due to its tower, which is the tallest church tower in Germany, at a height of 161.53 m. But it is not only the Münster that is worth a visit in Ulm/Neu-Ulm, as you will find out soon.

Museum Brot und Kunst – Forum Welternährung (Museum of Bread Culture)

The Museum of Bread Culture that was established in 1955 by the entrepreneur Dr. h.c. Willy Eiselen (formerly known as the Deutsches Brotmuseum) illustrates the history of bread and how it is made. The exhibits document the entire range of equipment and technological history in the making of bread, the most varied of baking ware models and the many facetted relationship between art and bread.

Ulm Zoo

The Ulm Zoo is located in the middle of the recreation park of Friedrichsau. It has an aquarium and a tropical garden. A variety of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects and mammals can be viewed in 95 individual locations (aquariums, terrariums, outdoor areas). There is a pet zoo for very young visitors.

Ulm Tent Festival

The "Ulm Tent Festival" in Friedrichsau park has been held every summer since 1987. German and international artistes give concerts of rock, pop, blues and jazz, as well as comedy, dance and variety shows.

Every year on the Saturday before Oath Monday, when the Mayor swears an oath to uphold the city's Constitution, some 5,000 candle-lit lanterns are launched onto the River Danube from boats as dusk falls. The Danube is set ablaze to become a glorious sea of light. Later on, columns of water from fire hoses, illuminated in colour, and flamboyant flares from Roman candles light up the Danube and the sky above.

At the Nabada (which means "swimming down the river" in local dialect), 30 river ferries and boats parade downstream, bearing creative and painstakingly produced caricatures of high-ranking politicians or local current events. They are joined by thousands of locals in sometimes foolhardy home-made constructions, which "swim down" the Danube. From 3 p.m. at the latest until far into the night, the whole of Ulm is out and about, celebrating all over the city with music and a great variety of gastronomic delights.
