Places of interest

Matera

Matera, located just 1 hour and 45 minutes from the resort, is a highlight of southern Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. This city of 60,000 residents is situated in a rocky gorge and offers a fascinating mix of history and architecture: the famous old town, “Sassi di Matera,” consists of ancient cave dwellings and a labyrinth of stone stairs and narrow alleys. Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world – a unique experience that is best enjoyed during weekdays to avoid the crowds.

Civita

Civita is impressive even on the approach: the winding road leads you past striking gorges and picturesque Calabrian landscapes with olive groves, blooming meadows, and cacti growing from stone walls. Founded in 1471 by Albanian refugees, it is now one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. The legendary Devil’s Bridge and the surrounding Raganello Gorges attract many hikers in the summer, while the village feels almost deserted in the winter.

Morano

Morano captivates visitors with its unique charm, even from afar. This small village seems like a Christmas nativity scene carved into the rocks of the Pollino Massif, blending seamlessly with the surrounding mountains. It is recommended to park at the lower edge of the village and explore its narrow, winding alleys on foot. Discover the Church of St. Mary Magdalene with its Byzantine dome and the imposing Norman castle ruins overlooking the town. Morano is also a creative haven, with artists revitalising the village and adding unique details that make it even more enchanting.

Amarelli Liquorice Factory

Halfway between the Maritim Resort and Rossano lies the famous Amarelli Liquorice Factory. Since 1731, the Amarelli family has been producing liquorice and liqueurs from grated liquorice root. Adjacent to the factory is a museum that narrates the fascinating history of the Amarelli family and their liquorice production. The museum was awarded the Guggenheim Enterprise & Culture Prize in 2001. In 2004, the Italian Post Office honoured this special museum with its own stamp in the “Italian Artistic and Cultural Heritage” series.

Chiesa di Santa Maria del Piano

The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Piano is the main church in the historic centre of Villapiana. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, it is now a protected monument. From the adjoining “Belvedere” terrace, visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the Sibari Plain and the Ionian Sea. The church is not only a place of worship but also a testament to Villapiana's rich history and culture. Its blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture and its valuable artworks make it a significant cultural heritage site in the region.

Monte Sellaro

Hikers and nature enthusiasts should not miss the Monte Sellaro. Part of the Pollino National Park, the largest national park in Italy, this mountain rises to 1,439 metres above sea level, offering stunning views of the Sibari Plain and the Ionian Sea. A popular starting point for hikes is the “Santuario Santa Maria delle Armi,” a historic sanctuary located at approximately 1,015 metres. From there, a well-marked trail leads to the summit, showcasing diverse landscapes, including dense forests and rocky sections. The hike takes about two hours.

Trebisacce

Trebisacce is a charming town on Calabria’s Ionian coast. It offers a delightful combination of beaches, culture, and authentic Calabrian lifestyle. The fine sandy “Spiaggia di Trebisacce” with its crystal-clear waters is perfect for swimming and relaxation, especially for families and beach lovers. Along the lively “Lungomare di Trebisacce,” visitors will find numerous cafés and restaurants with sea views, providing the perfect setting to unwind.
